so what’s the final boss of this book?
the amateur wants to be understood
the pro wants the piece to work
that sounds emotionally expensive
it is
but it’s also freeing. your ego can be loud in private. the page has a job in public
move the reader from one state to another
confused to clear. bored to curious. skeptical to considering. stuck to moving
exactly
not “did i express myself?” but “did this land?”
wait, doesn’t that make writing too audience-driven?
only if you confuse service with obedience
you still choose the truth, the taste, the angle. then you build a bridge sturdy enough for another person to cross
after revision, hand the draft to one honest reader and ask 3 questions: where did you want to stop, what did you remember, what changed?
their answers are craft data, not a referendum on your soul
craft data, not soul referendum. honestly that should be the subtitle
it would sell at least 6 copies to writers in crisis
